Soviet American Sail Unofficial Homepage

In 1989 40 Americans and 40 Soviets participated in a round-trip sail across the Atlantic Ocean. The trip was undertaken to show that the peoples of these great nations can undertake important projects and activities together, That we are more the same than different, and a little about each other.

The Schooner TeVega left New York City in June of 1989 with 20 Americans and 20 Russians aboard. The Russians had arrived in NYC 10 days earlier and spent most of those days touring the Northeast together witht the American half of their crew. On this tour, the crews spent the evenings in the homes of Americans who had agreed to host them. This was the first leg of the trip.

On July 7th, 23 americans of the 2nd leg flew from New York City to Helsinki and boarded a train for Moscow. Here the 2nd leg met the russian half of their crew and spent time living with them as we toured Moscow and Leningrad. Tevega arrived in Leningrad on July 15 at which point the 1st leg began their tour in Russia while the 2nd leg prepared to depart For New York City. On July 18th Tevega left Leningrad with the 2nd leg crew. Stopping briefly in Rekyavik, Iceland and St. Johns, Newfoundland, Tevega arrived in New York on Labor Day Weekend. The event finally ended 10 days later, after the 2nd leg tour of the Northeast, with the return of the Russian crew to Moscow.
